Because of piracy, more and more movie studios are aiming for blockbusters and movies that could draw the crow. Forget about quality! Just churn out a movie with the hottest contemporary actors and actresses, splice over a thin love story, some dance number, and voila! You’ve got a movie. Too bad for the more critical moviegoers, we don’t get the movies we deserve!

Piracy has become a salient feature of Philippine society and no doubt of both developing and developed countries. Movie and digital media piracy is here to stay.

A number of good movies are opening in Manila theaters and movie houses this last week of July. Here’s the rundown of the movies, with their movie trailers. Some of them good. Some of them bad. I’ll also give my recommendations for this week. Just holler if you disagree.

Kudos to Filipino independent film makers Jerrold Tarog and Ruel Antipuesto. Their movie “Confessional” won the Best Film in the category of First Features at the 10th Osian’s Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema in New Delhi on July 19, 2008.
