Pinoy Movie Blog of the Month: ReelAdvice.net
On the cool afternoon of December 20, I went to Antipolo, not to get chilly or anything, but to visit the Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film Institute (MDAFI). It was the tenth anniversary of the Jose Rizal Film, perhaps one of the best, if not the best, film about the Philippine National hero.
I met two movie bloggers at MDAFI–Jed and Vit. What do you know? They also blog about movies and regularly churn out movie reviews from their website: ReelAdvice. We had a chance to talk about Philippine Cinema and the movie industry while waiting for the screening of Jose Rizal and the short films of the MDAFI.
ReelAdvice is the Pinoy Movie Blog of the Month here at Penstalker. This is my way of discovering fellow Pinoy movie bloggers.
Here’s the transcript of a short email interview I had with Jed and Vit. Oh and by the way, they’re a couple! That’s a first perhaps–a couple blogger!
We started blogging about movies last March but actually it was a pet project that had lingered on our minds for several months already.
It was simply because as a couple, we both liked watching movies. It became one of the staple activities we do every week and honestly, it helped us develop our relationship on the early stages so movies are beyond just being a hobby actually; it really means something special for the both of us.
For me, Philippine Cinema is just disappointing at this time. Compared to other nations (not even including Hollywood), our country is really lagging behind. What makes this worse is that Philippine Cinema actually started very early on compared to our Asian neighbors. Maybe we are better off now than we were a few years back when the Toro/Bold film was king but still, Philippine Cinema has not matured.
Philippine Cinema is still tickled by money and the “in” thing. The bold films ended because there was no longer money there since they were banned by SM Cinemas. Now, romantic comedies and the “Vic Sotto” movies are making money. That is why most films that are coming out are on this (comedy) format. Philippine Cinema should learn not to seek only that which is “in” and which brings in the money but more for the love of the art and indiosyncracies of filmmaking.
Anything under the sun. We don’t really prefer a niche/genre of film because like life, films can be enjoyed on certain levels and emotions. As how we live life, we do not want to enclose ourselves on just a certain point of view, we want to feel the whole shebang. So there, hope you got that!
Check out their blog and read their movie reviews! Just like Penstalker, they blog solely about movies and movie reviews.

Hi Mighty!
Thanks for this wonderful opportunity! We think this is the first time we have been featured in another blog! So really, it’s just heart-warming!
This is a wonderful start for Penstalker for 2009. Hopefully this will help all of us “Pinoy Movie Bloggers” get to know each other.
Heck, this may even be a start of a group/association! Good luck to your new featurette here in Penstalker; it is really exciting and informative! We will be watching out for the other bloggers out there in the coming weeks/months!
para sa akin ang best movie about Jose Rizal ay yung “Bayaning Third World”
Magkaiba kasi sila ng approach eh. Although I would still say that Bayaning Third World is also one of the best. Lalo na for people who could not quite accept Rizal as the national hero.
