Mark Meily and Tara Illenberger on Independent Film-making

Hello friends, this is part 2 of the talks during the Mainstream Loves Indie talks on February 7, 2009. If you haven’t listened to Laurice Guillen and Tony Gloria yet, check out this post.

Mark Meily talks about his experiences in being an independent film-maker and how the process has changed him for the better. In a tone that invited no disagreement, Meily claimed that there are no such thing as independent films, there are only independent film-makers and that the “indie” is but another label being used by the media to label films produced independent of major studios.

Tara Illenberger, on the other hand, recounts her journey from being a film editor to a film director. She highlighted several aspects of independent film-making, She said that being an indie film maker means being (1) independent and free; (2) independent and alone; and (3) forced to (be) good.
