August Book Purchases

After my Master’s Class at PUP last Saturday, I dropped by the Booksale branch in SM Sta. Mesa. After being there fore about an hour and a half, I picked up five books for only PhP 256. Yup, I got all these books for just under $6. Woot!

Here are the titles and why I picked them up.

Forgotten Realms: Realms of Magic. This book is a collection of short stories from the magical world of Forgotten Realms. If you are a big fan of the Drizzt Do’Urden stories, you will also enjoy this anthology of short stories. It contains an origin story–that of Drizzt’s friend and companion: the Panther Guenhwyvar. It also features stories from Jeff Grubb, Mark Anthony, Dave Gross and Elaine Cunningham among others.

The FBI by Ronald Kessler. This book is an exciting and intriguing look into the workings of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation. Journalist Ronald Kessler has worked on a number of documentaries looking into the inner workings of government agencies even the Inside the CIA: Revealing the Secrets of the World’s Most Powerful Spy Agency and In the President’s Secret Service: Behind the Scenes with Agents in the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect

Harry Turtledove’s Worldwar: In the Balance. Alternate history: the stuff that Turtledove loves tinkering with. In the Balance presents an interesting notion–what if the opponents during the World War II united instead to fight a common foe–an alien invasion.

Science Fiction Handbook, Revised: How to Write and Sell Imaginative Stories by L. Sprague de Camp and Catherine Crook de Camp. I think I already have this book somewhere in my collection. But I just couldn’t resist buying it. It’s a manual for writing Science and Speculative Fiction. I’m trying to write some Ilocano Science Fiction so this might be an extremely valuable help.

Winning Modern Wars: Iraq, Terrorism and the American Empire by General Wesley K. Clark. General Clark is a critique of the Bush Administration’s handling of the War on Terror. His book exposed what worked and what didn’t in the Iraq occupation. It is an insider’s account of what happened and why he does not like the outcome.

It seems that I have enough books for the next month or so to have me preoccupied. The topics are varied and I find all of them interesting. Already, I have started reading Realms of Magic and getting a number of ideas for my own Ilocano Science Fiction stories.
