Robert Downey as Sherlock Holmes
A week ago, I wrote that Sacha Baron Cohen will play the character of Sherlock Holmes and Will Ferrell will play Watson. I like parodies and spoofs but Sherlock Holmes is almost sacred to me and having these two guys turn it into comedy seems to be sacrilege!
Thankfully, another Sherlock Holmes film is being planned and Robert Downey Jr. will be the lead character. Following his big success as Iron Man, Director Guy Ritchie’s casting crew is in the final stages of negotiations.
Director Ritchie’s version of the Sherlock Holmes tale is taken from a Lionel Wigram comic book yet to be released. The comic features a more adventurous Holmes with additional set of character traits other than stuffy. Boy! I wish they wouldn’t change the oddball that Sherlock Holmes is. He’s geeky and serious and a bit arrogant. But hey, he’s good and he can afford to do so!
Robert Downey is a good actor. But I just hope he will downplay the arrogant and nonchalant attitude of Tony Stark and really portray the quirky, violin-playing, drug-inducing super detective. That might not be the case though with the director basing his movie on a comic book and not on the stories that Arthur Conan Doyle wrote. Will Sherlock Holmes be more sociable this time? Will he be “cool” in the twenty-first century sense?
I hope Downey can pull off the Brit accent pehfecttly! Shooting begins in the fall and we can expect to see Downey’s take on Sherlock Holmes by October 2009.
When the movie is released, I will compare Sacha Baron Cohen and Robert Downey. I will praise one perhaps and diss the other! It’s gonna be a long wait but we’ll see!
