Kudos to Filipino independent film makers Jerrold Tarog and Ruel Antipuesto. Their movie “Confessional” won the Best Film in the category of First Features at the 10th Osian’s Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema in New Delhi on July 19, 2008.

The movie “Confessional” features the story of a documentarist chronicling the confessions of an influential but corrupt public official. This independent film from the Philippines won several awards at the 2007 Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival. It won the Best Picture, Best Sound, Best Screenplay and Best Director in the Cinema One film festival.

The indie film impressed foreign critics such as Tony Rayns, a film critic from London, Nagesh Kukonoor, a filmmaker from Hyderabad and Vimukthi Jayasundra, a Sri Lankan journalist and filmmaker. At first, the event organizers thought that this Filipino movie might be a little too culture-specific to be appreciated by foreign audience.

Thankfully, that wasn’t the case and it even won an award. The Pinoy indie film makers received $5,000 and they another $20,000 for the production of their next film. That’s a nice enough prize if you ask me.

In the same event, Osian’s Cinefan also awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award to Jose F. Lacaba. This is because he wrote the script for three films of Lino Brocka.
