No students Allowed in Malls?
If the Department of Education in the National Capital Region will have its way, students who are wearing uniforms will no longer be allowed to enter malls during class hours. The DepEd argues that students should not be distracted from their education by prohibiting them from entering malls during mall hours.
Take the example of the students from Philippine Science High School and the Quezon City Science High School, who are located very near SM North EDSA and Trinoma. They can easily cut class and go to the malls when they feel like it. They can go there for a million reasons. They can play video games, watch movies, or simply loiter around.
I wonder how the malls can implement this regulation though. How do you determine students from non-students? By their looks? I very well doubt. If uniforms are the mark of identification, if I were a student, then I would just bring extra clothes to school. Remove my uniform and enter the mall.
Another thing is, most public schools have several schedules for their classes. There are classes in the morning, in the afternoon, and even in the evening. So, students can easily go to the malls. Some students in uniform also prefer to pass through the malls because of air conditioning and shade. And still, some students aren’t as irresponsible as some who just go there to play video games and other stuff.
On the other hand, mall owners would naturally want their facility bursting with people. This promotes business. Without people, they cannot sell products and goods.
At face value, prohibiting students would be against their best interests.
We better ask DepEd how to implement this rule if ever it gets approved. Wouldn’t it be better to inculcate into students the value of studying and perseverance? I think that would be a much better proposition.
