Movies Opening in Manila on the Last Week of July 2008
A number of good movies are opening in Manila theaters and movie houses this last week of July. Here’s the rundown of the movies, with their movie trailers. Some of them good. Some of them bad. I’ll also give my recommendations for this week. Just holler if you disagree.
You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. Adam Sandler’s comedy film on a hairdresser Jewish super agent named Zohan hits Manila this week with a special sneak peek. What to expect from the movie? Chauvinism, slapstick and traditional Adam Sandler comedy with the occasional moral lesson interspersed. Here’s the trailer of You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.
A Very Special Love. Pop princess Sarah Geronimo’s movie with rising actor John Lloyd Cruz appears to follow the usual plot of Korean telenovelas and movies but manages to introduce a distinctly Pinoy flavor. For the lovestruck, the lovers and the simply hopeless romantic, this flick can prove the acting prowess of John Lloyd Cruz and of Sarah Geronimo. If you’re looking for something new and something deeper, goodluck!
Adam and Steve. A romantic comedy not for everyone. Remember Adam Sandler’s Larry and Chuck? This is something like it. See the resemblance in the very title? Adam and Steve, however, is the real thing. A romantic comedy for gays. Sorry, can’t find a good movie trailer for Adam and Steve.
Kalakal. On the Philippine Independent Film front, the movie Kalakal, in digital format is also coming out in some SM Cinema venues. This Pinoy digital film features a widowed mom who is led to a path of degradation by her lover. I can’t say much about this film but I gotta see it!
The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Perhaps to prevent pirates to get rich off this possible blockbuster, Manila theaters are releasing The Mummy 3 simulcast with US theaters. This is The Mummy movie without the Mummy and the original mommy, Rachel Weisz. We’re gonna see if this new batch of cast will work and if the Chinese setting will really be a big blast. Hmm… Jet Li is getting a number of Hollywood breaks recently. I wonder what’s his next project.
I say let’s watch Filipino movies first before other films. If you don’t like the treatment of A Very Special Love, then let’s register our complaints and our negative views. Soon enough, directors and producers will understand that we, Pinoy viewers are thinking and deserve much more. After watching John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo, go ahead and watch The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor!
