Getting Good Grades

School has officially started. Goodbye vacation. Goodbye late night kuwentuhan and gimmicks. Goodbye playing videogames till the wee hours of the morning.

School can be boring sometimes especially, if you have to face a lot of assignments and homework from your teachers. It can also be fun, if you just set your mind to it. Since you have a lot of friends in your class, why don’t you try to view it as good clean fun and do your best in your subjects? After all, your efforts won’t go to waste—you shall be preparing for your future.

Since you are already into school and there’s no escaping it, you might as well do your best. Here are some tips on how you could get some good grades.

1. Attend school and never skip class. This one is very basic, how could you enjoy your classes if you are away. Even if you do not understand a difficult subject like Algebra or the dreaded Calculus, just attend the class and put your butt on the chair. Take it all in. Eventually, you will come to understand your lessons. Or at the very least, your teacher can give you a passing grade with you just showing up everyday.

2. Listen actively and take notes. If you have a pen in hand, don’t roll it like drumsticks in your hands. If you do so, your teacher will get pissed off. Believe me, I’ve been there. And if the teacher asks you to stop, you’ll just get embarrassed in front of the class. Listen attentively to what your teacher is saying. Better yet, grab your pen and your little notebook and start jotting down important words and concepts that your teacher discusses. Don’t overdo it though. If you’re in high school, it’s okay to jot down every single word that your teacher says or puts on the blackboard. But if you’re in College, that’s not the case. Just take note of the important ones and forget about the rest.

3. Read your assigned readings. Never go to class unprepared. If your subject is History, Psychology or Political Science, your instructor expects you to read the assigned readings he mentioned last meeting. It doesn’t matter if it’s just ten pages or ten chapters, he expects you to at least have a grasp of what he will be talking about. If you don’t, there are sinister instructors who will call you out of the blue and ask you recitation questions. Imagine yourself in class, with all eyes on you because of your professor’s question. Imagine the embarrassment of not being able to answer the question. Dang! I’d melt on the spot if I were that student. This is especially more embarrassing with law schools. For the sake of your face and for you to avoid public embarrassments, read your assigned readings!

4. Get enough rest. I know school is tough. But reading from 10pm to 5am is not my idea of getting good grades. Give yourself some rest. After a grueling day at school, you need to replenish lost energy. Always try to get at least 6 hours of sleep. There’ll be plenty of time that you’ll have to deal with the rigors of school. Getting enough rest is important if you want to make it all the way through the end of the semester.

5. Do your course requirements ahead of time, or at least on the deadline. We have mastered the art of cramming. A term paper due tomorrow gets done tonight. Students also review tonight till the wee hours for the exam tomorrow. If you wanna get good grades and still have some fun, take my advice. Complete your course requirements ahead of time. This will give you ample time to do other course requirement and other pursuits like videogames or the Student Government.

6. Work hard. Play harder. Like this old old saying goes, “All work and no play makes Juan a dull boy.” I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to face books all my life. I also want some fun. When you feel that you have exerted your best in any situation or subject at school, reward yourself. Go grant yourself a Friday night out with friends. Go play your favorite videogames. Anything but the usual drag of studying. If you do so, you add an element of fun in your study habits.

Going through school, whether that be Elementary, High School, or College, doesn’t have to be boring. With just the right touch, the right attitude, and the right habits, you can get good grades and have some fun along the way.
