Dealing with the Monster of Digital Distraction

Do you ever feel like you can’t live without your celphone or you can’t do away with your instant messengers? Back when I was working for a multinational, my mobile phone was on and my IMs were always busy. Multi-tasking is now the name of the game. It’s very difficult to work without some form of multitasking.

The results are obvious: shorter attention spans for office workers, digital distractions that can significantly reduce productivity and profitability. Ironically, these technologies were supposed to improve productivity and not to decrease it.

Because digital distractions costs billions of dollars everywhere in the world, the developers and engineers at Google introduced E-mail addict. It is an experimental email feature that shuts down the email program for 15 minutes.

If you turn the E-mail addict feature, the screen will go blank and display a message that reads: “Take a walk, get some real work done, or have a snack. We’ll be back in 15 minutes.”

If this feature will be made available to everyone in the world, people just might become a little more sociable, don’t you think?

I agree – information overlaod is a pain. That’s why I have recently started a blog which is devoted to the subject of information overload and how to deal with it. Comments are always welcome!

Also, we will be launching a new Web 2.0 platform for alert services and reminders that will make it easier to deal with IO.

Hi Nicolas, thanks for visiting my blog. Yeah, Information overload is a big problem. We need some more tools and effective training to others, I suppose.
