August 20, 2008
By User ImageMighty (Who am I?)

A number of good movies will be shown Manila during the second half of August 2008. Actually, we are already approaching September and a number of these movies will start showing today! Whew. I’ve been a little late in posting these movies.

Anyway, here are the movies opening in SM Cinema, Robinsons Movieworld, Trinoma, Ayala Malls, SM Mall of Asia and other movie houses in the Metro. I’ve also provided a short synopsis of the movies and a bit of recommendation if it’s worth watching or not.

Loving You
Torotot
The Star Wars: Clone Wars
Grave Dancer
Death Race
For the First Time
Mutant Chronicles
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Eskandalo

Loving You
A feel good movie that could send “kilig to the bones!” It’s just that Jean Garcia and Polo Ravales doesn’t seem to have much chemistry. The theme of the movie is the call center industry. If you’ve seen “My Fake American Accent” in the Cinemalaya 2008 Film Festival, you’d get more portrayal of the call center lifestyle in the Philippines.

Watch Loving You if you are a hopeless romantic who happens to be working in a call center. Here’s the Loving You trailer.

Torotot

Baron Geisler comes back with Torotot, a digital film exploring the lives of two couples and how infidelity ruins their marriage. What starts with a one-night-stand ends up rather tragically. Watch this movie for the performance of Geisler and for the good filmmaking of Maryo delos Reyes.

The Star Wars: Clone Wars

Set in the time between the Star Wars Episodes 2 and 3. You know the ending, of course. Anakin Skywalker with Obi Wan Kenobi sets out to rescue the son of Jabba the Hut. He succeeds, of course, for he has yet to become Darth Vader. The redeeming quality of this film, though, is the animation. It’s good.

Watch it if you are a total fan of Star Wars! Don’t mind the story that much, though. Enjoy the movie for sheer nostalgia. Here’s the Star Wars: Clone Wars Trailer.

Grave Dancer

Grave Dancers is a Halloween flick offered early. It has an indie-like feel and the performances are good. The movie poster has a striking resemblance with Sadako of the Ring, though. Grave Dancers is a smart horror and not just about screaming in the midst of blood, gore and horror. Watch it if you want a fresh take on the horror genre.

The Grave Dancers movie trailer is scary already.

Death Race

Jason Statham is really riding the crest of his career wave! Although he’s considered as a B movie actor, he’s drawing crowds to his movies. Death Race is like Speed Racer without the crazy effects! It’s equally explosive! Action packed! And portrays kick-ass action. Watch it if you’re looking for high adrenaline kicks!

For the First Time

KC Concepcion’s debut film with Richard Guttierez has been hailed by a number of people in the media. I wonder if it’s worth watching. KC Concepcion has beauty, brains and theater artist experience behind her. I just don’t know if her love team with Richard Guttierez would click. Watch it if you and your partner are looking for a romantic flick to while away the time or just cuddle in the movie houses.

Mutant Chronicles

Kick ass action. Mind numbing gun shots and action scenes. This is an interesting sci-fi movie set in post apocalyptic Earth. Here’s the synopsis from imdb.com

Mitch Hunter and Nathan Rooker, battle hardened Capitol soldiers, fight a desperate battle against a Bauhaus advance. When an errant shell destroys an ancient stone seal, they find themselves facing a new enemy: hideous necrmutants, with boneblades that grow from their arms. Mithc barely manages to escape. Nathan does not.

The mutants multiply by millions and they destroy all before them. The Corporations’ leader, Constantine, is about to abandon the planet and leave countless innocents to their desperate fate, when he is approached by Brother Samuel, leader of the Brotherhood, and ancient monastic order

Samuel is keep of the Chronicles, a book that prophesies both the rise of the Mutants, and the ‘Deliverer’ that will destroy them. Samuel believes he is that Deliverer destined to journey deep into the earth and destroy the source of the mutant scourge.

He manages to recruit Mitch, along with a handful of like-minded soldiers: Steiner, honor bound Bauhaus officer; sword wielding Severian; street fighter El Jesus; fearless beauty Duval; and stoic warrior Juba.

“Mutant Chronicle” follows Mitch and Samuel’s mission to venture into the very heart of the darkness in an attempt to save the planet from marauding hordes of deathless mutants

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

This movie with a rather long title features the story of two girlfriends who spend their holidays in Spain and become enamored with a painter. Too bad, his ex-wife is coming back to their consternation. Watch it if you want to see the beauty of Scarlet Johannson and witness the excellent film making of Woody Allen. And yeah… if you want to know how to use art to attract girls. Hehehe.

Eskandalo

There’s no end to gay-themed indie films. And Eskandalo is another movie with such a theme. ’nuff said.

Here’s the trailer and check it out for yourself.
